Digital Betacam (Digibeta) The Format we use will depend on the projects budget.

In a perfect world for standard definition TV we would always use and recommend Digital Betacam.

This is a superb format used by broadcasters around the world for top quality programmes.

However quality comes at a price premium with a new Digibeta camera costing in the region of £30,000.00.

For certain types of production that use a lot of "Chroma Key" special effects or multiple layers of images Digibeta is the only serious option.

One important thing to consider is that the single most expensive aspect of any production is not the equipment but the personnel, so in reality the premium for using Digibeta may only be a small percentage of the overall production budget.

Digital Betacam (Digibeta) was developed by Sony as a top end broadcast television production format. It has been the standard for quality TV production ever since it's launch.

It has even been used to produce a few films and most notably some of the re-released scenes in the original Star Wars films were re-shot using Digibeta.

The cameras have proved to be robust and reliable and give the cameraman an incredible amount of control over the final image.

The compression system used is very mild at only 2:1, this helps maintain the original image quality over many generations or layers of special effects.

A Digibeta camera can record for up to 42 mins on a single tape, larger tapes up to 124 min's are available for studio machines.
